The prime target for FC Barcelona in the defensive midfield position and Real Sociedad player Martin Zubimendi has spoken about his future.
Born in San Sebastian, Zubimendi joined the youth setup of Real Sociedad at a very early age. he then made his debut with the club’s C team in 2016.
Zubimendi was then promoted to the B team after a contract renewal in 2018. Soon after that, he was included in the first team setup. Zubimendi soon cemented his spot with the senior side and became an important player on the squad.
He played a pivotal part in Real Sociedad’s Copa Del Rey victory in 2019-20 season. Zubimendi made his national team debut against Lithuania when the Spanish u-21 represented the nation following a covid-19 outbreak in the senior team camp. The midfielder then was a part of the Spanish squad that won silver in the last Olympics in Tokyo.
Barcelona target Zubimendi gives a big future update
Since joining the club as a youngster, Barcelona captain Sergio Busquets have been one the most important players for the club. The Spaniard who is also the current captain of Barcelona is now in the final year of his contract.
The 34-year-old midfielder is currently past his prime. And it has been understood that he does not want to continue at the club beyond this year. For the past few years, there was no direct, replacement of Busquets in Barca’s setup. And even today, Busquets remains someone who can’t be replaced easily.
There are no players in the world who can play the game of football like how Busquets does. The best Barcelona can do is to bring someone whose playstyle is close to him. That’s how Martin Zubimendi comes into the picture.
Barcelona right now thinks that the 23-year-old midfielder, whose playstyle is close to Busquets can be the ideal replacement for him. It was earlier reported that Barcelona will look to sign him in the upcoming summer transfer window.
Seeing all this, Sociedad is now looking to renew the contract of Zubimendi. And finally, the midfielder himself has given some news regarding his contract renewal.
According to Carrusel Deportivo, Zubimendi said, “There’s a very good feeling between me and Real Sociedad. My contract extension is a matter of time.”
He further added, “Xavi wants me? I don’t even think about it now, I’m focused on Real Sociedad”.
Now looking at this, it seems like Barcelona’s dreams of Zubimendi are practically over and the midfielder will continue to play for Real Sociedad.
What’s Next?
Barcelona will now have to look for other targets and Portuguese Ruben Neves is linked with them for some time. But for now, there’s no concrete information available and only time will tell who is going to replace Busquets at Camp Nou.
