Sri Lanka’s sports minister Roshan Ranasinghe made the headlines after he took a bold step in their cricket history. He sacked the entire board following Sri Lanka Cricket World Cup 2023 humiliation.

Sri Lankan cricket team led by Kusal Mendis were far from hitting the sweet spot in the marquee tournament. The 1996 World Cup champions failed to bring the best out of themselves in the tournament.

In fact, they were clueless more often than not, in terms of their batting, bowling and fielding departments. The Sri Lankan cricket team also came under fire for their poor fielding show.

For the record, they have the lowest percentage of 61% in terms of catching, the least by a team in the ongoing mega tournament. Roshan Ranasinghe was not happy with the Sri Lanka Cricket World Cup performance.

Currently, Sri Lanka are seventh on the points table. Having played seven games so far, they won just two games. On the other hand, they lost the rest of the five games in the competition.

Sri Lanka Cricket World Cup performance were not up to the mark. In fact, Sri Lanka Cricket World Cup 2023 performance turned from bad to worse as they failed to produce a spark.

Sri Lanka’s 1996 World Cup-winning captain Arjuna Ranatunga has been recruited as the chairman of a new interim board, Ranasinghe’s office mentioned everything in a statement.

“Sports minister Roshan Ranasinghe has formed an interim committee for Sri Lanka Cricket,” the statement said. The country’s sports minister echoed that the Sri Lanka Cricket officials had no moral or ethical right to be there in the office.

“Sri Lanka Cricket has been besieged with complaints of player disciplinary issues, management corruption, financial misconduct and match-fixing allegations,” Ranasinghe said in the letters, released to Sri Lankan media.

“Money started flowing to the cricket board after 1996 and with that came those who wanted to steal,” he added in a statement. All these remarks garnered everyone’s attention following the Sri Lanka Cricket World Cup 2023 humiliation.

Sri Lanka reached the finals of the Cricket World Cup thrice in their history. Out of that, they were able to win once under the captaincy of Arjuna Ranatunga in 1996. Sri Lanka beat Australia in the final to win the coveted title.

On the other hand, they surrendered at the hands of Australia in 2007 World Cup final. Besides that, they lost to Team India in the 2011 ICC ODI World Cup final.
