EFL Cup 2021 Third Round Results: Chelsea and Tottenham go ahead on penalties, Manchester City steamrolled opposition while Manchester United get shock defeat

EFL CUP 2021: Third round results, fixtures, reactions, scores, latest coverage. Chelsea and Tottenham Hotspur go through on penalties. West Ham United knock Manchester United out as Arsenal and Liverpool register big wins. Everton are defeated by Queen’s Park Rangers on penalties.

Chelsea vs Aston Villa (1-1 in FT, 4-3 on Penalties)

Aston Villa put up a spirited fight against Chelsea in the third round forcing the match into extra time. Timo Werner put the hosts in front but within just ten minutes, Aston Villa equalised with a stunning header from Archer.

The match was stretched into the penalty shootout wherein Aston Villa failed to capitalize. Kepa Arrizabalaga was once again the star of the show with a crucial save to deny Nakamba. Ben Chilwell too missed for Chelsea but in the end, Reece James scored to ensure Chelsea moved ahead.

Tottenham Hotspur vs Wolverhampton Wanderers (2-2 at FT, 3-2 on penalties)

Similar to Chelsea, Tottenham Hotspur’s game was also stretched to the penalty shootout. It a tough match between two quality sides. Harry Kane and Ndombele scored for Tottenham Hotspur whereas Podence and Dendoncker found the net for Wolves.
However, in the penalty shootout, Dendoncker, Ruben Neves, and Conor Coady all missed handing Tottenham Hotspur the win. Hojbjerg had missed for Tottenham but Harry Kane, Gil, and Reguilon scored.

Manchester City vs Wycombe (6-1)

Manchester City absolutely smashed Wycombe Wanderers by six goals to one. Even though Pep Guardiola fielded the youngsters they made full advantage of the game. Wycombe scored first via Hanlan. But then Ferran Torres, Phil Foden, Kevin De Bruyne, Riyad Mahrez, and Palmerston all got on the scoresheet.

Manchester United vs West Ham United (0-1)

The shock defeat of the third round belonged to Manchester United who fell at the hands of Premier League club West Ham United. This was David Moyes’s first win against Manchester United after being sacked by the club. Lanzini scored the solitary goal in the ninth minute as Manchester United failed to find an equaliser despite bringing on Bruno Fernandes in the end.

Finally Arsenal are finding some rhythm in their game. A comprehensive three-nil victory to the Gunners who will get a big boost. Alexander Lacazette, Emile Smith Rowe, and Eddie Nketiah all scored for Mikel Arteta’s men. With the north London Derby ahead, they need their goal-scoring form back.

Liverpool vs Norwich City (3-0)

Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool are looking quite the part now with yet another victory this time in the Carabao Cup. Liverpool registered a 3-0 victory with Takumi getting two goals and another added by Divock Origi in the second half.

Queen’s Park Rangers vs Everton ( 2-2 at FT , 8-7 on Penalties)

Queen’s Park Rangers gave a shock defeat to Rafa Benitez’s Everton as they stretched the match into penalties. Everton made a comeback twice in regular time with Lucas Digne and Andros Townsend scoring. Charlie Austin scored twice for QPR. The match ended after sudden death in the penalties and Everton’s Tom Davies’s shot was saved by Seini Dieng and Dunne won it for QPR.

Leicester City vs Millwall (2-0)

Brendan Rodgers Leicester City are also en route to the fourth round of the Carabao Cup after they registered a 2-0 victory against Millwall in the third round. Ademola Lookman and Kelechi Iheanacho scored for the Foxes.
