Borussia Dortmund managing director Carsten Cramer has explained why Cristiano Ronaldo was never a transfer target for the German club when he was linked with a move away from Manchester United in the summer and after he parted ways with the Old Trafford outfit in November 2022.
Cristiano Ronaldo, who re-joined Manchester United in the summer transfer window of 2021, was heavily linked with a transfer away from the Premier League side in the summer of 2022. However, despite being linked with a number of clubs, a move never materialized and the Portuguese superstar stayed put at the Old Trafford outfit.
Cristiano Ronaldo, however, parted ways with Manchester United in November 2022 by mutual consent. His contract with Manchester United was terminated by mutual agreement following his explosive interview with Piers Morgan.
Cristiano Ronaldo, who turned 38 in February this year, was linked with a number of clubs before eventually signing for Saudi Arabian side Al-Nassr on a free transfer. The Portuguese icon has joined the Saudi Pro League side on a two-and-a-half-year contract that makes him the highest-paid footballer in the world.

Borussia Dortmund were among the clubs linked with Cristiano Ronaldo, but Carsten Cramer has revealed that the former Manchester United star was never a transfer target for the German club.
Carsten Cramer said the value of Borussia Dortmund does not depend on social media followers in an apparent swipe at Cristiano Ronaldo. The Portuguese superstar is one of the most – if not the most –marketable footballers in the world and has huge followers on his social media accounts.
“Basically, the value of Borussia Dortmund does not depend on social media followers,” Carsten Cramer told Kicker [via GOAL].
“We are a football club, that’s the key. We can have the best ideas in marketing, but if we lose 3-0 at home to Freiburg, it doesn’t work. Even with the best brand presentation, the be-all and end-all is the product.”
Meanwhile, since signing for Al-Nassr, Cristiano Ronaldo has featured in five games for the Saudi Arabian outfit and has bagged five goals and two assists in those matches.
Borussia Dortmund, meanwhile, sits second in the Bundesliga points table behind Bayern Munich. Both Bayern and Dortmund are tied on points but the former have the better goal difference.
