Football News: FA Cup and League Cup to see huge changes

Football News: In an attempt to make the structure of English football better, English Premier League is interested to make huge changes to FA Cup and League Cup’s format.

As time has progressed, football fixtures have become more condensed, especially in the top 5 leagues of Europe. From players to coaches everyone has voiced their concern regarding this.

Recently UEFA added a Nations League competition to an already hectic calendar which was hugely criticised by many players and managers. They are now going to change the format of the UEFA Champions League which will see teams playing even more matches throughout the season.

Finally, to clear up this hectic schedule, the English Premier League have decided to take some drastic measure.

Football News: FA Cup and League Cup to have radical changes

FA Football News: FA Cup and League Cup to see huge changes

According to The Times, English Premier League will have a meeting with all its shareholders on Wednesday regarding a ‘New Deal for Football’.

This new deal will see FA Cup scrapping the replays of the third and fourth rounds from the 2024 season onwards.

Meanwhile, another radical change will allow the clubs in the European Competition to not take part in the League Cup competition or send their U-21 team.

With the winter World Cup coming up in November, questions have already been raised about the scheduling of this season. The World Cup have impacted the third, fourth and fifth round of the League Cup. Meanwhile, FA Cup’s future is currently uncertain. Clubs have no idea how FA will finish both these tournaments within due time.

Further reports suggest that League Cup can be scrapped altogether. There is also a proposal to move all FA Cup matches to midweek.

No more parachute payment

The change of formats of both cup competitions is not everything that will be discussed in the meeting. On top of these changes, Premier League is thinking to scrap parachute payments. The Parachute payments right now help the relegated clubs.

Premier League is thinking to distribute the payment evenly to all the lower league clubs.

As of now, most of the lower league clubs are ready to welcome the changes. Meanwhile, EFL is yet to be approached regarding these issues but they are ready to discuss the changes.

All this being said, these proposals are currently at a very basic stage. Premier League will have its meeting with all the shareholders on Wednesday. However, even if things do change, it will only be implemented from the 2024/25 season.
