Chelsea interim manager Frank Lampard has provided an injury update on N’Golo Kante and Mason Mount ahead of their Champions League clash with Real Madrid.
Chelsea will square off with defending Champions League winners Real Madrid in the first leg of the quarter-final in their upcoming match. Speaking after Chelsea slumped to a 1-0 defeat to Wolves in Premier League in their most recent fixture, Frank Lampard issued an update on both N’Golo Kante and Mason Mount.
Both N’Golo Kante and Mason Mount were not part of the Chelsea squad that took on the Wolves. It was also Chelsea’s first game since the club appointed Frank Lampard as their interim manager.
Speaking after the game, Frank Lampard said N’Golo Kante will be available for selection against Real Madrid as things stand. However, Mason Mount remains an injury doubt for the game against Real Madrid.
Frank Lampard provides injury update on Chelsea duo of Mason Mount & N’Golo Kante
Providing an injury update on N’Golo Kante after Chelsea’s 1-0 defeat to Wolves, Frank Lampard said [via Metro]: “Kante is managing his fitness. He is fit but we know after his injury the idea of the game, game, game is too much.”
Frank Lampard also explained why Mason Mount missed the game against the Wolves. Lampard revealed Mount missed the game due to a pelvic injury but did not provide a definitive update on whether the England international will be available for the quarter-final first-leg match against Real Madrid.
Lampard said: “Mason had a feeling in his pelvic area, an injury he has been carrying the last few days. He has trained in those days but has struggled a little bit.“
Mason Mount was a firm favourite of Frank Lampard during his first stint as the Chelsea manager. He has fallen out of favour recently and was an unused substitute in Chelsea’s goalless draw with Liverpool earlier this month.
With Frank Lampard’s return to the Chelsea dugout, Mason Mount was expected to feature for the Blues against the Wolves. But an injury ruled him out of the fixture, as Lampard explained.
It remains to be seen if Mason Mount will be available for selection against Real Madrid.
Meanwhile, like Chelsea, Real Madrid also goes into the Champions League quarter-final first leg on the back of a defeat. Real Madrid took on Villarreal in La Liga in their most recent fixture and suffered a 3-2 defeat, which has further dented their hopes of lifting the league title.
