It Would Be ‘Fantastic’ If Cristiano Ronaldo & Lionel Messi Came Back to La Liga, Says Atletico Madrid President Enrique Cerezo

Enrique Cerezo: It would be fantastic if Cristiano Ronaldo & Lionel Messi came back to La Liga

Atletico Madrid president Enrique Cerezo has said that it would be ‘fantastic’ if Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo returned to La Liga.

Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo take the first and second spots respectively in the list of players with the most goals in La Liga. But both players no longer play for a club that competes in La Liga.

Lionel Messi left Barcelona in the summer of 2021 after his contract with the Catalan outfit had expired. Messi then signed for Paris Saint-Germain on a free transfer and has been plying his trade for the French club ever since.

Cristiano Ronaldo, meanwhile, left Real Madrid in the summer of 2018. The Portuguese superstar then joined Italian behemoth Juventus. Ronaldo left Juventus in the summer of 2021 and re-signed for his former side Manchester United. But the Portuguese international parted ways with Manchester United by mutual consent in November last year and has since signed for Saudi Arabian side Al-Nassr.

Enrique Cerezo, who is the president of La Liga side Atletico Madrid, said it would be fantastic if both Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi came back to La Liga.

I think it would be fantastic if Messi returned to La Liga, as would Cristiano Ronaldo. Both are still playing and it would be fantastic if they came back,” Enrique Cerezo told reporters [via GOAL] when attending an event at the Real Club Tenis Barcelona.

Meanwhile, Lionel Messi has been linked with a return to FC Barcelona after the end of the current campaign. Messi’s current contract with PSG expires in June this year.

Although PSG would like to keep hold of Lionel Messi beyond the current campaign, they have not yet reached an agreement with the Argentine over extending his stay at the club.

That has led to speculation surrounding the future of Lionel Messi. Barcelona are reportedly interested in re-signing him but it remains to be seen if they can pull off what would be a sensational signing.

Meanwhile, a return to La Liga for Cristiano Ronaldo appears less likely. He currently plies his trade for Al-Nassr, who he has a contract that runs until 2025 with. Ronaldo will be 40 by the time that contract expires.
