Jurgen Klopp: Arsenal Could And Should Have Lost the Game Against Liverpool

Jurgen Klopp: How Liverpool didn’t win it with those late chances against Arsenal, I don’t know

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp was at a loss to understand how they did not defeat Arsenal given the late chances they had in a game that ultimately ended in a 2-2 draw.

Liverpool hosted Arsenal at Anfield in Premier League in their most recent fixture. Arsenal got off to a great start at Anfield, opening the scoring through Gabriel Martinelli in the eighth minute of the match.

Gabriel Jesus’ goal in 28 minutes doubled Arsenal’s lead, but Liverpool clawed their way back into the game. Mohamed Salah halved Liverpool’s deficit in the 42nd minute of the match. The Egyptian attacker had an opportunity to score the equalizer in the 54th minute of the game after the referee awarded Liverpool a penalty.

The referee pointed to the spot after Rob Holding brought Diogo Jota down inside the penalty box. Mohamed Salah stepped up to take the kick, but his effort was wide off the target. However, Liverpool finally restored parity in the 87th minute, with Roberto Firmino scoring the equalizer.

Liverpool had chances to score their third goal and potentially the match-winner late in the game. However, they did not, which left Jurgen Klopp at a loss.

Jurgen Klopp claimed Arsenal could and should have lost the game, and that a point is a better result for the Gunners.

Speaking to Sky Sports after the game, Jurgen Klopp said [via Mirror]: “A bit typical for us this season. In an open game, completely open, they score with the first situation and the second one. Our reaction was good. It was a spectacular game in the end. How we didn’t win it with those late chances I don’t know.

I’m caught in between [being happy and not]. I have no problems with drawing. Arsenal were good but they could and should have lost this game. The point for them is better.

We had moments and chances where we didn’t finish the situations off. Slightly typical. They’re flying so they score with their first chance. The goal we scored helped massively. At half-time, it wasn’t over. It was a sensational atmosphere. A good moment to get the equaliser.

All of a sudden we were in charge of a wild game. We deserved at least a point. If Ibou [Konate] uses his head [for a late chance] it’s a goal. Maybe he slipped. He had a chance, it was just there.
