Lionel Messi has become the joint-highest goalscorer in Europe’s top five leagues after he scored for Paris Saint-Germain in their most recent fixture.
Paris Saint-Germain took on Lens in a Ligue 1 game in their most recent fixture and they cruised to a 3-1 win. Lionel Messi scored PSG’s third goal of the game, and it was the 495th goal the Argentine has scored in Europe’s top five leagues.
The now 35-year-old has been plying his trade for Paris Saint-Germain ever since signing for the French behemoths in the summer of 2021. Messi joined PSG after his contract with Barcelona had expired.
Since making the move to PSG, Lionel Messi has so far racked up 21 goals in Ligue 1 for the French outfit. Messi scored six goals in Ligue 1 for PSG in his first season at the club. The Argentine has amassed 15 goals for PSG in Ligue 1 so far in the ongoing 22/23 campaign.

Lionel Messi & Cristiano Ronaldo have scored 495 goals each in Europe’s top five leagues
Prior to his move to Paris Saint-Germain, Lionel Messi scored 474 goals in La Liga for Barcelona across 17 seasons. The combined total of goals he has scored in La Liga and Ligue 1 is 495.
That means he has equalled Cristiano Ronaldo in terms of goals scored in Europe’s top five leagues. The Portuguese superstar has also scored 495 goals in the top five leagues of Europe.
The now 38-year-old racked up 103 Premier League goals for Manchester United across two different stints. He also hit 311 La Liga goals for Real Madrid during a glorious nine-year stint at the Spanish club. Cristiano Ronaldo also scored 81 Serie A goals for Juventus during his time at the Italian behemoths.
Cristiano Ronaldo no longer plies his trade for a club in Europe’s top five leagues. He left Manchester United in November last year after his contract was terminated by mutual consent. He has since signed for the Saudi Arabian side Al-Nassr.
That also means Lionel Messi can move clear of Cristiano Ronaldo in the list of players with the most goals in Europe’s top five leagues.
PSG have seven games remaining in Ligue 1 this season, and if Messi scores a goal in any of those, he will have one goal more than Ronaldo in Europe’s top five leagues.
