Peter Schmeichel Slams Manchester United Players For Performance in 2-2 Sevilla Draw

Peter Schmeichel: Few Manchester United Players Should Be Embarrassed With Their Performance in 2-2 Draw With Sevilla

Former Manchester United goalkeeper Peter Schmeichel said few of the Red Devils’ players should be embarrassed with their performance in a 2-2 draw with Sevilla.

Manchester United took on Sevilla at Old Trafford in the first leg of the Europa League quarter-final in a game that ended in disappointment for the Red Devils. A brace from Marcel Sabitzer inside the first 21 minutes saw Manchester United go 2-0 up and it looked like the Old Trafford outfit would kill the tie in the first leg itself.

Manchester United had chances to do so but they did not. And, a late capitulation saw the Red Devils concede two goals as Sevilla pulled off a sensational comeback. That has left the tie in the balance.

In a further blow to Manchester United, both Raphael Varane and Lisandro Martinez picked up injuries during the game. Bruno Fernandes, meanwhile, picked up a yellow card that has ruled him out of the second leg.

Speaking after the game, Peter Schmeichel said a few Manchester United players should be embarrassed by their performance against Sevilla.

He said on BBC Radio 5 Live [via GOAL]: “A few players today need to look at themselves and think about whether they are contributing to the team enough. There are a few players who should be embarrassed by their performances.

De Gea played well, he made two fantastic saves, but couldn’t do anything about the goals. He kept Man United in the lead. The best player is the guy who scored twice, Sabitzer was really good. His teammates have let him down. he showed the way and they didn’t catch on to it. This could and should have been a 5-0 win.

Meanwhile, Marcel Sabitzer opened the scoring in the 14th minute before he doubled Manchester United’s lead in 21 minutes. Bruno Fernandes assisted the first goal while it was Anthony Martial who took that role for the second.

Sevilla pulled one back in the 84th minute through an own goal conceded by Tyrell Malacia. It was another own goal that saw Sevilla restore the parity. It was Harry Maguire who conceded the own goal in the 90+2nd minute.

Meanwhile, the second leg between Manchester United and Sevilla will kick off at 12:30 am Indian Standard Time on April 21.
