Portugal national football team reportedly have a backup plan in case they fail to reach an agreement with Jose Mourinho to become their new manager.
Current manager Fernando Santos’ position has been called into question after Portugal underperformed at FIFA World Cup 2022 despite boasting a star-studded squad.
Portugal progressed to the round of 16 after finishing atop the points table in Group H. They romped to a 6-1 win over Switzerland in the round of 16, producing arguably the best performance by any side at FIFA World Cup 2022.
However, the EURO 2016 winners failed to progress beyond the quarter-final, where they took on Morocco. The African nation stunned Portugal in the quarter-final as Morocco inflicted a 1-0 defeat on the European heavyweights to dump them out of FIFA World Cup 2022.

Portugal have a backup plan if they fail to reach an agreement with Jose Mourinho to become the national football team manager
Fernando Santos continues to occupy his position as Portugal’s national football team manager. A decision regarding his position is yet to be made but is expected to be made soon.
Reports have said Portugal are set to part ways with Fernando Santos and the current AS Roma manager Jose Mourinho is the frontrunner to become the new manager of Portugal’s national football team.
Reports have also said Portugal could look to offer Jose Mourinho the role of the national football team manager whilst also remaining in his position as the manager of AS Roma.
Portugal also have a backup plan in place if the move to appoint Jose Mourinho as their manager fails to materialize. According to Bruno Andrade of UOL, current Portugal u-21 manager Rui Jorge could be promoted and given charge of the national football team if they fail to reach an agreement with one or two big names.
Rui Jorge, who is also a former Portugal international, has been the manager of Portugal u-21 since November 2010. He has been occupying that position for more than a decade now.
Meanwhile, it will be interesting to see what Portugal’s FA decides with regard to whether to stick with Fernando Santos or part ways with him, under whom the country have won the EURO 2016 and UEFA Nations League 2019 titles.
