Real Madrid rejects UEFA's compensation offer for the 2022 Champions League final

Real Madrid have rejected UEFA’s compensation offer for the disaster of the 2022 Champions League final. The club wants UEFA to take full responsibility for the chaotic scenes in last year’s final for the Los Blancos fans.

UEFA has offered to compensate some of the fans who attended the final last year. However, Real Madrid wants the European football governing body to fully compensate all the fans. They have also released a statement regarding the same.

The repayment scheme has been labeled as ‘insufficient‘ by the Spanish giants. Real Madrid wants UEFA to “rectify and assume full responsibility” for the issues faced by its fans for the Champions League final.

Los Blancos are on the front foot in this issue as an independent report held that UEFA should bear the sole responsibility. The mismanagement from UEFA for the final was quite evident as the kick-off for the final was delayed by 36 minutes.

While the French police had to use tear gas and other measures to control the fans. Due to this many Los Blancos fans were unable to enter the stadium on time. The UEFA blamed the Liverpool supporters for the chaos as many of them had fake tickets.

UEFA later set up a committee to look into the affairs and the whole mess. A thirteen-member committee on 13th February 2023 released its report as well. In the said report UEFA has been blamed for the whole fiasco.

UEFA’s stance on the whole issue

The European football governing body has agreed to refund the ticket money of Liverpool fans. As for Los Blancos fans they are only willing to offer compensation to some of the fans.

For Real Madrid fans to claim the compensation they will have to show that they entered the stadium after 9:00 PM. UEFA has set the 9:00 PM timeline because that was the time when the original kick-off was supposed to take place.

The governing body believes that the offer made by them to Los Blancos supporters is fair and accurate. They have said that despite repeated requests Real Madrid have declined to contribute to their request to plan a refund scheme.
