The chief selector Ajit Agarkar, travelled to Sri Lanka for a meeting with skipper Rohit Sharma and coach Rahul Dravid. This meeting took place after the India vs. Pakistan Asia Cup match in Kandy, which got rained out after the first innings.
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) announced the 15-player squad for the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023. KL Rahul made it into the team, while Sanju Samson didn’t make the cut.
Samson, Tilak Varma, and Prasidh Krishna are currently in Sri Lanka for the Asia Cup, but they won’t be part of the ICC World Cup squad. The team will be captained by Rohit Sharma. Ishan Kishan, who performed well in the middle order, has made it into the World Cup squad.
Rohit Sharma will be leading the team, and Ishan Kishan, who performed well in the middle order, secured a spot in the squad. Apart from Captain Sharma, our batting lineup will rely on Shubman Gill, Virat Kohli, Shreyas Iyer, and Suryakumar Yadav.
We’ve included allrounders like Hardik Pandya, Ravindra Jadeja, Axar Patel, and Shardul Thakur to strengthen our batting. In the bowling department, our pace attack will be led by Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Shami, and Mohammed Siraj. Kuldeep Yadav is also part of the squad as a spinner.
KL Rahul’s fitness issue for India’s squad
The selection committee recently had a discussion about KL Rahul‘s fitness. They were concerned about whether he was physically ready to join the team. To make sure he was fit to play, the medical team examined him and fortunately. They gave him the go-ahead, meaning they said he was okay to play.
After getting the good news, Rahul has been actively practicing. He’s been spending many hours practicing his batting skills at the National Cricket Academy in Bengaluru. This shows his dedication and hard work to prepare for upcoming matches.
Additionally, there’s some information that he’ll soon be travelling to Sri Lanka to join the Indian team for the Asia Cup. This suggests that he’s been deemed fit and ready to represent his country in this important cricket tournament.
Ajit Agarkar on ICC Cricket World Cup 2023
A few weeks ago, during a press conference, Agarkar mentioned that Rahul had a minor injury. That’s why the team decided to have Sanju Samson as a backup option.
“Shreyas has been cleared as fully fit, while KL Rahul has encountered a new minor injury. Sanju Samson is accompanying us in hopes of his recovery, possibly for the second or third game of the Asia Cup. Both are crucial players, and we have until September 5 to finalize the World Cup squad, allowing us some time.” Agarkar to the reporters in New Delhi following the announcement of the squad for the Asia Cup.
When the reporters inquired about Rahul’s chances of recovering in time and whether he would be in good enough shape to take on the role of a wicketkeeper, Agarkar expressed optimism yet again. He conveyed that he was hopeful about Rahul’s recovery and ability to perform as a wicketkeeper.
“Shreyas has been cleared as fully fit, while KL Rahul has encountered a new minor injury. Sanju is accompanying us in hopes of his recovery, possibly for the second or third game of the Asia Cup. Both are crucial players, and we have until September 5 to finalize the World Cup squad, allowing us some time.” Agarkar concluded.
Agarkar had given us a clue before that the selection committee would be choosing the team for the World Cup from the group of 18 players they had for the Asia Cup. As we anticipated, when they finally announced the squad, there weren’t any big shocks or unexpected choices.
