Tottenham Hotspur faced a shocking home defeat as Newcastle’s first-half goals sealed the Champions League spot. Antonio Conte is in trouble as many of his first-team players missed out on the game due to injury.
Newcastle United doubled their lead before the first half, and Kane’s goal did not inspire the Spurs to come back to the game.
On paper, Tottenham was the better team, but both clubs were on the same level on the field. Needless to say, New Castle was brilliant in the game and their season is going well so far. Almiron’s tight-angle finish five minutes before half-time was enough to secure an away win at Tottenham Hotspur stadium.
Conte did say that his team is suffering due to a tight schedule and injury. Kuluvesky and Richarlison missed the game due to injuries. Hojbjerg and Romero both missed the game due to injuries.
Newcastle United and Injury-Hit Tottenham Hotspur Lineups
Conte was forced to use the usual 3-5-2 formation like the previous game. Son and Kane both led the attack. The team looked more defensive, as they lacked attacking players.
On the other hand, Newcastle was with their regular team without Isak. They came with the 4-3-3 lineup with Wilson, Joelinton, and Almiron.
Tottenham Hotspur’s Match Day Activity
In the first half, Tottenham had many chances but no goal came from their side. Whereas Newcastle scored a controversial goal by fouling Lloris and Wilson gave a lead in the 31st minute. Following that Almiron also scored from a tight angle in the 40th minute.
During the second half, Kane scored from the corner with a diving header. And that was the final goal of the game. But Wilson missed a golden chance to increase the goal difference.
Overall, Tottenham was awful at defending and Newcastle took advantage of that.
The Lillywhites had possession of 52% of the game, but their finishing was not good enough. They also had a lot of wrong passes. Kane and his mates had 5 shots on target out of 17 shots.
It was Nick Pope of the Magpies, who had a brilliant game and saved some of the sure chances of the opponent. Newcastle controlled the game by maintaining 48% of the possession. But they had an equal number of shots on target as the Spurs.
Post-Match Interviews
During the post-match interview, Conte spoke about the team’s full commitment to the game. He revealed: “The fans have to understand we are doing our best in every moment. The commitment was really high.”
He also pointed out the difference between their team and the title contenders. He added: “You see the title contenders in these periods when you play every three days because you need to have depth in your squad. A strong squad with great quality. We have only just started our process.”
Responding to the controversial goal, Eddie Howe spoke: “I haven’t seen it again. It looked like the two players came together. Why should that foul go in the way of the defending team?”
Howe did praise the game from his team. He spoke: “I thought it was a really, really good performance and probably the best since I have been here.”
What’s Next for Both Teams?
Tottenham Hotspur will meet Sporting in their next fixture at their home ground on Thursday. Whereas Newcastle will face Aston Villa who was brilliant in the last game.
