Serie A club Lazio are interested in signing Arsenal outcast Lucas Torreira. Torreira has been out on loan at Atletico Madrid since Oct 2020 and is set to return this summer.
Torreira was sent out on loan after he was pushed out of the main starting XI after then new manager Mikel Arteta made new signings in the midfield. Odegaard was brought on loan from Real Madrid while Thomas Partey was bought from Atletico.
The Uruguayan has been unimpressive for Atletico Madrid and Simeone will not be looking to make the deal permanent. He only started 3 games for the La Liga club this season and made 16 appearances off the bench.
Torreira to Lazio?
New manager Maurizio Sarri is looking to strengthen the midfield this summer. Reports suggest the new manager wants to change the team’s formation from 3-5-2 to 4-3-3 for the upcoming season.
According to an Italian journalist, Gianluca Di Marzio the Serie A club have already contacted the player’s agent regarding a move to the club. The 25-year-old will be looking forward to a move since playtime at Arsenal will be hard to come by.
The defensive midfielder has already openly discussed the idea of leaving England and a move this summer seems almost imminent. He has also been linked to a move to Fiorentina and also South America if a move to Italy doesn’t pan out.
Arsenal bought Torreira from Sampdoria for a reported fee of €30 million in 2018. Since then he has had 89 appearances for the Gunners and has scored 4 goals. During his current season at Atletico Madrid, he helped the club to the La Liga title and scored 1 goal this season.
“We have spoken to him and we know how difficult a time this is for him. He was really attached to his mum and he’s really attached to his family. It’s a hard time for him and emotionally there is a lot of thoughts that will go through his mind. When things are like that, it’s not the moment to make decisions.” – Arteta when quizzed on Torreira’s future and potential to Boca Juniors in South America.
A move to Lazio might just interest Torreira. The Arsenal outcast will have a chance to prove himself under Sarri. The move also ensures regular playtime and also ticks his move back to Italy criteria.
LAZIO SUMMER PLANS
The Italian club finished 6th last season and only managed to qualify for the Europa League. They do not have enough funds to make huge signings and will be looking to bring players on loan and make 2-3 low price signings at the max this summer. Torreira, Kostic, and long-time target Jackson Porozo in the last few weeks.
The club will be hoping Sarri can help them win the Europa League title and help them qualify for the UCL next season. It remains to be seen how the players will do under the former Chelsea manager.
Serie A is going to be very interesting next season. Mourinho will be managing AS Roma, Allegri at Juventus, and Sarri at Lazio. Let’s see which manager can keep his job by this time next year.
