Managers Sacked by Chelsea before Thomas Tuchel

This morning news broke that Thomas Tuchel has been sacked by Chelsea as their head coach. Tuchel’s sacking came in as a surprise for many fans and pundits. Especially after considering the fact that the new Chelsea Board had just backed the manager in the transfer window.

Chelsea’s new owner had made Tuchel the head of the transfers and the club acted upon his suggestion and brought him the players he wanted. Tuchel’s demands were met and the board looked like they were backing their guy.

But with The Blues struggling since the start of the season and being 7th in the premier league table it was evident that Chelsea’s new owner clearly did not like what he was seeing from his team. But last night after their embarrassing loss to Dinamo Zagreb was the final straw for Tuchel and he was finally sacked.

With Chelsea sacking another manager it is nothing new for them. The Blues under the previous owner had 13 managers in 9 seasons. Roman Abramovich’s philosophy was simple: You Perform You Survive You don’t perform You Perish. Still, with that attitude and many managers, Chelsea had pretty success as a club in those years.

With Tuchel gone, We decided to look at a few other managers whom Chelsea has sacked in the past few years.

Managers Sacked by Chelsea in the past decade

1. Andres Villas-Boas 2011-12

He was hired to be Chelsea’s next coach in 2011. He was regarded as the next Jose Mourinho after his success at Porto. Chelsea back then effectively paid his release clause to get him which was around 15 million back then. But things didn’t go well.

His Chelsea side started to lose Important games and by end of February 2012, they dropped out of the top 4 race. Soon they had a big fell out with the senior players and there was turmoil in the dressing room. Villas-Boas was fired on March 4, 2012, by Chelsea after a 1-0 league loss to West Brom left them three points behind Arsenal in the race for fourth place in the Premier League.

2. Jose Mourinho 2013-2015

Jose Mourinho was one of few managers who returned to Chelsea for a second stint as a manager. Special One returned to Stamford Bridge after having immense success at Inter Milan and Real Madrid. In his second season after his return, The Blues enjoyed a lot of success. They won the League Cup and were crowned Premier League champions. But soon things started to go downhill as 3rd season syndrome kicked in for Mourinho. Chelsea lost a few games and drew few and just picked 12 points from 11 games in the league. Soon after on 17 December 2015, after losing 9 of 16 Premier League matches, Chelsea announced they sacked the special one for a second time.

3. Antonio Conte 2016-2018

Next in line came Antonio Conte was appointed as the new Chelsea boss. Conte got off to a fast start in West London, winning the Premier League in his first campaign. In his second season, The Blues won the FA Cup, but everything started to fall apart when they didn’t make it to the Champions League.

After being sacked, he allegedly ended up costing the club £30 million in legal expenses and compensation. Conte got off to a fast start in West London, winning the Premier League championship in his first year. In his second, Chelsea won the FA Cup, but everything started to fall apart when they didn’t make it to the Champions League. He was let go, and it was subsequently rumored that the club would have to pay £30 million in legal expenses and damages.

4. Sarri 2018-19

Sari was appointed as the new Chelsea manager. But he lasted only one season. Sarri was never down well with Chelsea fans. Sarriball was never understood by Chelsea fans and also by their higher-level management. Though Sarri won Europa League in that season and also managed to finish top 3 in the premier league. Yet he was sacked after his first season at Stamford Bridge.

5. Frank Lampard 2019-2021

After Sarri was dismissed an interim manager was appointed who was kept in charge till the end of the season. Then in 2019 Chelsea legend, Frank Lampard was appointed. In the first season, he managed to finish Chelsea in the top 4. He was also runner-up in the FA Cup that year.

But later in his next season despite the Covid-19 Pandemic The Blues managed to get in a few top talents like Ziyech, Havertz, and Timo Werner. But still, with all those transfers, Chelsea wasn’t performing and they were out of the top 4 race in the premier league. Thus soon by January 2021, Frank Lampard was sacked by Chelsea.
