Manchester United News: Anthony Martial finally opens his mouth
Anthony Martial accuses former United managers, Solskjær and Mourinho of his downfall at United.
After the arrival of Mourinho, Martial’s United career got dented. He lost his place in the starting eleven and could never become consistent like in his first season at Old Trafford.
In an exclusive interview with France Football, he said, “I scored 17 goals in my first season and had 13 assists and in the first part of the (2017-18) season I was the top scorer. Then Mourinho bought (Alexis) Sanchez and I hardly played anymore. It cost me my World Cup place. I should have been there.”
Apart from that he also got entangled with the United manager with many off-the-field issues.
Upon the arrival of Belgian forward Romelo Lukaku, Martial was stripped of the no.9 shirt and was given no.11 which clearly he didn’t like.
Former United legend Ole Gunnar Solskjær was then brought to replace Mourinho. However, things did not change for the French forward.
His performances never reached the level of his first season and the United forward has spoken about the reason.
According to Martial, the forward played the last two seasons with many injuries. because of these injuries, he lost the biggest part of his game, “acceleration”.
On top of that, his injuries only got worse and Solskjær never spoke about this in the media.
While describing the incident and how he felt, Martial said, “You are being asked to sacrifice yourself for the team – and then you are dismissed. For me, it is almost treachery. That’s what I hate. I can be blamed – but not for being fake.”
What’s next?
Since Erik ten hag’s arrival, the United forward has again found confidence and is now a big part of United’s squad. However, he has only played 45 minutes in this season because of an Achilles injury.
United meanwhile had a tough start to the season and lost their two opening matches. They came back in style and won the next four and are now currently in fifth place in the table. United will now face Sheriff Tiraspol in their next outing.
