Manchester United beat West Ham United at Old Trafford with Marcus Rashford‘s 100th United goal, as they are currently fifth in the English Premier League table.
Cristiano Ronaldo did feature in the starting XI and had a decent game. Elanga and Rashford played on the wing with a 4-2-3-1 formation. Varane missed out on the game due to injury, as Maguire started a game after a long time.
West Ham was dominant in attack, as they had more shots than the Red Devils. United was superior in controlling the possession and had more chances than David Moyes’s men.
Every player deserves credit in this narrow victory over West Ham, as David De Gea was absolutely brilliant towards the end of the game as he made some spectacular saves to secure a vital win for his club.
Match Day Activity of Manchester United
During the first half, after some tireless efforts, Rashford’s towering header from a brilliant cross of Eriksen gave an early lead in the 38th minute of this game. Even though West Ham posed continuous threats to Manchester United’s defense.
In the second half, Ronaldo had a golden opportunity in the 62nd minute. But shot the ball wide of the post. CR7 was a continuous threat, as he had more shots on goal than any of his teammates. But failed to score any goal. At the end of one hour of the game, West Ham tried tirelessly. But was able to put the ball into the net. The scoreline remained the same thanks to brilliant De Gea.
Antonio had a powerful long rang shot in the 82nd minute, which got deflected and hit at the top of the post. A few seconds later, Zouma almost scored from a corner but was magnificently saved by De Gea. In the 86th minute, Fred’s header hit the post, and the scoreline remained the same. In the final few seconds left in the game, Rice shot the ball from long-range but was saved again by De Gea.
Post Match Reaction
During the post-match interview with Sky Sports, Ten Hag revealed his thought on Rashford’s brilliant goal. He spoke: “I think we made a great goal. It was magnificent, the pass from Christian Eriksen and then the header was really a hammer from Marcus Rashford.”
About no goal in the second half, he also added: “In the second half we have to manage it better. But the spirit we have is fabulous. We have the quality to score goals, but attacking football effectiveness we have to improve that.”
David Moyes spoke: “If you look through the game, we have been really close. We deserved to come away with something. I don’t think we could have done much more.”
He also pointed out that the team “gave the ball away a bit too much and that led to Man United’s goal”. But he praised his former goalkeeper David De Gea. As he spoke: “We know what a great keeper De Gea is, he was during my time here, and we hoped he wouldn’t save one of those two chances. I’m pleased for De Gea because he is a great guy but disappointed that one of those didn’t go in.”
Manchester United will play next against Real Sociedad on Thursday in Europa League group-stage action.
