Memphis Grizzlies guard Ja Morant will miss the rest of the season with a torn labrum. The NBA team announced on X, formerly known as Twitter, on Monday night.
According to the official Grizzlies release:
Morant’s right shoulder subluxed during Saturday’s training session. After experiencing persistent pain and instability, Morant’s MRI revealed a labral tear.
After undergoing season-ending surgery, Morant should recover fully in time for the 2024–25 campaign.
Devastation for Grizzlies:
For the Grizzlies, who were finally building some momentum following an underwhelming start to the season, this is heartbreaking news. In the nine games that Morant had participated in, Memphis had a 6-3 record. During that time, he averaged 25.1 points, 8.1 assists, and 5.6 rebounds.
Because of what was described as a sore right shoulder, Morant was unable to play against the Phoenix Suns on Sunday. Before the announcement of the season’s conclusion, he was also anticipated to miss Tuesday’s game against the Dallas Mavericks.
After the declaration, Morant shared a blue heart emoji on X.
Morant’s and Grizzlies’ season to forget
Earlier in the 2023–24 season, Morant—who signed a five-year, $193 million rookie extension to stay with the Grizzlies in 2022—was suspended for 25 games due to several incidents in which he displayed a gun on social media.
This kind of loss is unavoidable, but if you want to see the bright side, the Grizzlies were likely too far behind in the Western Conference standings to challenge for anything more than a Play-In Tournament spot after their disastrous start to the season without Morant.
