Former UFC champion Daniel Cormier has made headlines recently for his outlandish joke about NBA star Russell Westbrook. While providing his ‘Keys to Victory’ for Gilbert Burns during his pre-fight walkout at UFC 288, Cormier suggested that Burns should avoid being like Westbrook.
“Russell Westbrook, who I love, is one of the most talented guys in the NBA. As is Gilbert Burns [in the UFC.] Russ got to the NBA Finals once,” Cormier said on the UFC 288 telecast.
“He got back on the verge of it a couple of times, but he was never able to break through. This is Durinho’s [Gilbert Burns] chance to get a second opportunity at a championship, but you’ve got to separate yourself from the great Russell Westbrook and go and earn another title fight.”

Daniel Cormier’s Joke Sheds Light on Pressure to Win Championships in NBA and UFC
While Daniel Cormier’s joke was meant to be taken lightly, they highlight a broader issue in both the NBA and UFC: the pressure to win championships. Russell Westbrook has made the playoffs 12 times in his career but has yet to win a championship. Similarly, Burns has had one title fight against Kamaru Usman, and despite coming close to winning, he eventually lost by TKO.

Despite Daniel Cormier’s joke, Russell Westbrook and Burns remain two of the most talented athletes in their respective sports. Westbrook has faced criticism in the past for his play in big games and has had confrontations with both fans and the media. But his talent is undeniable, and his playoff appearances prove that he is one of the best players in the NBA.
Similarly, Burns is a talented fighter with an advanced array of skills. His recent loss to Belal Muhammad may have been a setback, but he still has a chance to reclaim glory in the future.

Westbrook and Burns are both incredibly talented athletes who have accomplished a great deal in their careers and should be celebrated for their achievements regardless of whether they win a championship or not.
