Tottenham Hotspur News: Earlier this week, Tottenham Hotspur were removed from the UEFA Conference League. The decision was made after their game with Rennes was postponed due to a Covid outbreak in the squad.
Spurs have started well in life under Antonio Conte. But a Covid outbreak in their squad made life difficult for Antonio Conte and his staff. Several first-team players and coaching staff had been infected by the virus.
Owing to this, Tottenham Hotspur’s Premier League matches against Burnley, Brighton & Hove Albion, and Leicester City were postponed. Tottenham’s match against Rennes in the UEFA Conference League was also postponed for the same reason.
Antonio Conte blasts UEFA’s decision to remove them from the Conference League
UEFA were not able to finalize a new date after the postponement of the Rennes vs Tottenham Hotspur game in the UEFA Conference League. Following this, Spurs were handed a ‘forfeit’ loss.
Owing to the loss being awarded, Tottenham Hotspur exited the competition on the group stage. The match had to be scheduled before 31st December, but the clubs failed to do so, hence such a result was awarded by UEFA.
Following the announcement, Tottenham Hotspur had reportedly accepted their fate. But as per ESPN, Spurs are said to be considering an appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport. Though no appeal has been made yet, Spurs are confident that the decision would be overturned once they appeal.
Tottenham Hotspur boss Antonio Conte led the charge to show the frustration in UEFA’s decision. The Spurs boss said, “This decision is not fair as we were facing a big problem like COVID. We didn’t play as we had many players with COVID and the government decided to stop our training sessions and close our training center.”
Antonio Conte blasted UEFA’s decision and said that things could have been planned in another way. The Italian said that even in the report, UEFA has mentioned that Tottenham Hotspur could play due to Covid cases and nothing else.
The Spurs manager added that he disputes the decision and knows that there is another step. He added that his team’s qualification should be on the pitch and not on the court. Owing to this, it is expected that Tottenham Hotspur would file a dispute in the coming days.
Condition in the Tottenham Hotspur camp now?
Antonio Conte provided a positive update on his Tottenham Hotspur players following the 2-2 draw against Liverpool. The draw pushed Spurs to the 6th position in the Premier League with games in hand on their top 4 rivals.
The Italian boss confirmed that most of his players are now Covid negative. Conte also added that he is very happy to see his players completely well now. And the Spurs manager hoped that they would regain match fitness soon.
