WWE legend Hacksaw Jim Duggan reveals how to win Royal Rumble

It’s always a special and historical feat being the inaugural winner of a major WWE event. Especially, when you come away victorious after facing a number of wrestlers in one go.

WWE icon Hacksaw Jim Duggan holds that special and historical feat for one of wrestling’s most popular pay-per-view events on the calendar year. The American wrestler won the first-ever Royal Rumble event in 1988.

Hacksaw was the 13th entry out of 20 contestants that year when the industry was still known as WWF. He battled and fought hard until he was face to face with only ‘One Man Gang’. But Gang stood at 6 feet and 9 inches, weighing in at 450lbs. Getting him out of the ring was going to be no easy task.

However, the skilful and cheeky Hacksaw managed to get the better of his final opponent. What he lacked in size in comparison to his counterpart, Hacksaw made up for in grit and determination. And he was left as the last man standing in the ring.

Hacksaw will forever be considered as one of the greatest Royal Rumble winners. But despite that, he still wants to give tips to participants for the future.

WWE icon Hacksaw reveals hacks to win Royal Rumble

In a recent interview with Betway Online Casino, Hacksaw spilt the beans on how to win a Royal Rumble. He discussed strategy and approach. The WWE Hall of Famer also labelled his Royal Rumble victory as his biggest achievement in wrestling.

The 68-year-old former wrestler said, “You should try to stay away from people. The less time you’re in contact with people, the longer you stay in the ring. The whole thing is about longevity and avoiding elimination.”

That’s why when fans watch Royal Rumble you see everyone goes straight to the corners. That’s considered a safe place,” he explained.

The 68-year old is currently on a Legend’s contract with the WWE. And he dived deeper into the approach for winning the Royal Rumble.

Hacksaw went on to add, “You want to be aggressive. You want to be strong. You want to be quick, and luck of the draw has a lot to do with it as well. It’s always better to come in later. You’re fresher and sharper than the guys who’ve been out there longer. For the first five guys or so, that’s a long time in the ring.”

He concluded by stating that nobody is controlling any fights so participants need to be wary of their surroundings, “You can be kicking butt and then somebody comes up behind you and that’s it. It’s very different to a singles fight. I liked being able to control the pace in a fight, but in a battle royale or a Royal Rumble, forget about it. Nobody’s controlling nothing, it’s like the Wild West out there.”
