Alessia Russo’s goal proved to be the winner in this Arsenal vs Aston Villa Women’s Super League fixture. Her strike from outside of the box beat Aston Villa goalkeeper Daphne van Domselaar.
To add to Arsenal’s joy, Beth Mead provided the assist for the goal. The 28-year-old forayed into the Aston Villa box and, instead of shooting, passed the ball to Alessia Russo, who had the space and time to strike it into the Aston Villa net.

This was also Beth Mead’s first game since suffering an ACL injury in November last year. She came on in the 88th minute of the game, replacing Noelle Maritz.
The victory takes Arsenal’s point tally to four points in three matches, having earned just one point from their first two fixtures. Arsenal, who finished third in the Women’s Super League last season, languishes at seventh in the WSL table this season.
Speaking after the win over Aston Villa, Katie McCabe, who scored the equalizer for Arsenal, said it was an unbelievable performance.
“It was an unbelievable team performance,” McCabe told the Arsenal club website. “We played right until the very end and I think it shows the mentality in this team. The girls coming off the bench and making the impact they did, and you know what, 35,000 fans here to cheer us on at the Emirates was unbelievable, so we’re just delighted to get the win for them today.“
